It’s completely normal to feel anxious in stressful situations every now and again. Getting sweaty palms when you’re about to do a speech or propose is something everyone experiences. However, if you are going through intense anxiety at the thought of doing day to day things like getting out of bed or having to deal with people, there is something happening on a much deeper level.
1. Excessive worrying
If you are spending most days worrying about something whether it be about a deadline or even something simple like making dinner, you might have anxiety. If it also happens to be interfering with your everyday life, it might be time to see a specialist.
2. It’s persistent
If you’ve noticed that your extreme worrying isn’t down to an intense couple of weeks at work but instead you’ve felt this way for months or even years. This can be a sign of a mental health issue rather than just a stressful situation.
3. Irrational fears
Yes, everyone is scared of something others might think is silly like cockroaches or butterflies but for people suffering with anxiety their fears are exceptionally more irrational. It’s when the fear stops you from living your life that it might be down to anxiety. If even the thought of having to walk down a path that might have a butterfly leaves you crying and stressed, it could be down to anxiety.
A lot of the time social anxiety can be crippling, to the point where even facing a conversation with a colleague is too much to handle. People who suffer with anxiety might find themselves avoiding certain situations just so they don’t have to deal with it.
5. Panic attacks
You might not even know that you suffer from panic attacks until you’re in the middle of one. Heart racing, feeling helpless, dizziness and even chest pain can be signs of a panic attack. If you think you have had one before and can trace it back to a time you felt anxious, it might be something you need help with.
6. Chasing perfection
A lot of the time people who suffer from anxiety also have an overwhelming need to attain perfection. Whether that’s in their personal or professional life, a lot of the time it is something they focus on in order to control their anxiety.
There are plenty of reasons behind having trouble sleeping but sometimes it can be put down to anxiety. Anxiety about falling asleep or needing to wake up and make sure x, y and z are all done.
